On September 4, 2024, Kayode Egbetokun, the acting inspector general of police that President Bola Tinubu appointed on Monday night, is anticipated to leave the Nigeria Police Force.
This is based on the civil service rule, which states that civil servants must retire after 35 years of service or when they reach the age of 60, whichever comes first.
In his appointment of a police official whose retirement date precedes his term in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari is the example that Tinubu will be following if he is confirmed as the Inspector General.
Usman Baba, the previous Inspector General (IG), was supposed to retire from the police on March 1, 2023, the day he turned 60. However, Buhari appointed Baba on April 6, 2021, in violation of the Police Act 2020, which prescribes a four-year tenure for an IG.
Born on September 4, 1964, Egbetokun began his career in the NPF on March 3, 1990, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in Course 16. His career has lasted more than three decades.
He graduated from the University of Lagos with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, from Delta State University with a Master of Science in Engineering Analysis, and from Lagos State University with an MBA.
The current Inspector General (IG) is an Ogun State native who was President Tinubu’s principal security officer in the past.
