The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied rumours that its official X account, formerly known as Twitter, was hacked and explained why it hasn’t been available recently. The anti-graft agency clarified that a technical issue during an update procedure was the cause of the account’s inaccessibility.

With more than two million followers, the EFCC’s official X account has been inaccessible for a few days, leading to speculation of a possible cyberattack. An error notice read, “The term you entered did not bring up any results,” on the account’s homepage page.

“Please try again later,” which sparked a lot of rumours about the account’s whereabouts.

The EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, addressed the matter in response to these worries, stressing that the account was not compromised.

“Our X account is down temporarily due to ongoing upgrades, and we will soon bounce back,” Oyewale said. As you may know, a system upgrade may cause it to become momentarily unavailable. Our goal in upgrading is to better serve the general population.”

In an official statement, the EFCC went on to clarify that the technical issue arose during an attempt to update some details on the account’s biography.

“The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to some unsubstantiated claims in a section of the media suggesting that the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Commission has been hacked and hijacked by unknown individuals,” the statement continued.

“The Commission wishes to state that these claims are false and misleading categorically.”

The declaration went on, “The Commission’s official X account has not been compromised, notwithstanding such baseless allegations. While trying to add specific details on the Commission’s biography on the app, a technical error happened. The EFCC’s X Account is in the Final Stages of Restoration”

“This issue was swiftly reported to the X Support Team, and the restoration of the account is currently underway.”

Oyewale told the public that the EFCC is still fully operating on all other social media platforms, such as its official website, Facebook and Instagram accounts. He added that the EFCC and the X Support Team are putting in a lot of effort to find a solution and get the account’s full functioning back as soon as feasible.

Reiterating that the problem is solely technical and unrelated to any outside meddling, the EFCC sought to allay worries and disinformation over the nature of the account’s outage in its statement.

Stakeholders and the general public are urged to keep checking the EFCC’s other verified communication channels for updates and official information as the commission gets closer to fixing this malfunction.
