Yauri Local Government Area residents in Kebbi State have bemoaned having to pay N60 per 25 litre gallon for tainted water they drink and use for various household tasks.

The locals, according to the media, have been fighting various waterborne illnesses for more than 30 years as a result of the tainted water they drink and use for all household tasks.

Mallam Jabir, a local government resident, told the media over the phone on Tuesday that despite the local council area’s residents’ requests for intervention from the state and federal governments through their representatives, nothing has been done to improve their circumstances.

This is where I grew up. We have been going through this for the past thirty years, and it is my place. The authorities are informed.

“Everyone knows about this problem, but nothing has been done about it,” Jabir remarked.

He continued, “As far as I’m aware, Yauri is the only local government I know of experiencing this issue.

“Residents of Kebbi South Senatorial District and Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency in Kebbi State, according to a media report, petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to have their National Assembly representatives, Senator Garba Musa Maidoki and Hon. Garba Umar Uba, recalled due to their subpar work and neglect of duty.

More than ninety voters/electorates from the Yauri Local Government Area of the state signed the petition, dated August 7, 2024, and addressed to Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of INEC.

The petitioners bemoaned Maidoki and Umar Uba’s failure to carry out their obligations to them, pointing out that their petition was filed in accordance with sections 69 and 110 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The angry voters claim that their representatives have disregarded their wants and concerns even though they were chosen to represent them and enhance their living conditions.

They emphasised that they are facing appalling conditions such as poor roads, run-down schools, insufficient health facilities, and displacement from widespread insecurity, in addition to extreme neglect and abandonment.
